What actually happens under your yard
Every drain in the house runs to one pipe, and that pipe runs to a tank buried in the yard. What happens next is simple physics, and understanding it is the difference between a routine pump-out and a five-figure repair.
The house
Every sink, shower, toilet, and washing machine drains into a single building sewer line running out to the tank on a slight downhill slope. There is no pump in a conventional system. Gravity does the work.
The tank
Wastewater sits here long enough for physics to sort it. Heavy solids sink into a sludge layer at the bottom. Grease and lighter material float into a scum layer at the top. Relatively clear water in the middle, called effluent, is what moves on. Baffles at the inlet and outlet keep the floating layer from escaping. This is the layer that matters: when scum or sludge builds up far enough to reach the outlet baffle, solids start leaving the tank.
The distribution box
Effluent leaves the tank and enters a small box that splits the flow evenly between the drain field lines. A d-box that has shifted or clogged sends everything down one line and overloads it.
The drain field
Perforated pipe in gravel trenches releases effluent slowly into the soil, where bacteria finish treating it. This is the expensive part of the system and the part a skipped pump-out kills. Solids that escape the tank clog the soil, and once a field is clogged it is replaced, not cleaned.
That is the whole reason for a pumping schedule. Pumping protects the drain field, and the drain field is the part you cannot afford to replace.
